In Malaysia, cervical cancer is the third most common cancer (National Cancer Society Malaysia, 2019). Every year, approximately 2,000 Malaysian women are diagnosed with cervical cancer.
The leading cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV infection is related to 99% of cervical cancer cases. High-risk HPV subtypes alone (HPV-16 and HPV -18) have been identified to be the cause of at least 70% of cervical cancer (World Health Organization, 2019).
Cervical cancer develops from the abnormal cells of the cervix. It is usually due to persistent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cellular damage to healthy cells.
Before cervical cancer develops, the disease has a window of opportunity, whereby abnormal cervical cells (pre-cancerous cells) from persistent HPV infection and cellular damage, takes 5 -10 years before they finally become cancerous cells. When cancer progresses, it starts to invade and spread to other organs of our body (brain, lungs, abdomen, and pelvic organs).
Most of the time, cervical cancer has no clinical symptoms. The presence of clinical signs and symptoms usually suggest that cervical cancer is at an advanced stage. Hence, it is vital for women to have regular cervical smear tests or Pap tests so that the disease can be detected early or even at the Pre-Cancerous Stage.
Nevertheless, women should consult the doctor if they are experiencing symptoms such as:
• Post-menopausal vaginal bleeding
• Bleeding during or after intercourse
• Abnormal vaginal bleeding
• Bleeding or spotting between periods
• Pelvic and abdominal pain

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease. Indeed, no one should die from cervical cancer.
Education, awareness, and regular Pap Smear are the main steps for cervical cancer prevention. Besides that, the HPV vaccine is available to boost our immunity and prevent persistent HPV infection in women.
Unfortunately, most women are not aware of the importance of getting screened as well as getting the HPV vaccination.
At present, the Ministry of Health Malaysia is giving the immunisation FREE for all girls in Form 1 (girls aged 13).
