Anaemia is a condition where there is a deficiency of healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells, or to be more particular, the haemoglobin in the cells act as an oxygen transporter to carry oxygen to the body tissues. In Malaysia, 1 out of 5 Malaysians is diagnosed with anaemia according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019.
What is Anaemia?
There are several causes of anaemia, ranging from nutrient deficiencies, chronic diseases, gynaecological conditions, gastrointestinal bleeding, haemorrhoids and inherited red blood cell disorders. Iron-deficiency anaemia is the most common found type of anaemia in Malaysia, often due to inadequate dietary iron intake, blood loss or poor absorption of iron.
The symptoms of anaemia vary and depend on its severity; while some individuals may not experience any symptoms, others may exhibit noticeable signs. If signs and symptoms do appear, they may include:
Tiredness
Feeling light-headed
Cold hands and feet
Headache
Shortness of breath
