Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in Malaysia, accounting for 19.8% of all medically certified cancer mortality in this country. Since most lung cancer patients are diagnosed when they reach an advanced, incurable stage, mortality rates in Malaysia remains high. Over 75% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at either stage III or IV.
While genetics may predispose certain people to lung cancer, cigarette smoking remains a major risk factor. Local data suggests 92% of Malaysian male lung cancer patients have a significant history of smoking. November is the official lung cancer awareness month and in conjunction, Beacon Hospital initiated this fun run “The Amanzing Lung Scavenger Hunt” with the aim to:
• Raise awareness about lung cancer signs and symptoms for early detection, recent evolution in diagnostic, therapeutic options and prevention
• Encourage and educate the public to achieve healthy lungs, a healthy and smoke-free lifestyle
• Raise sufficient funds to help with lung cancer patients in need to treatment
In this Amazing Lung Scavenger Hunt, teams of four to six people will race around Perdana Botanical Garden, Kuala Lumpur with other teams. Contestants strive to arrive first at “Pit Stops” (or game stations) of the race to solve the question/game of each “Pit Stop”.
Once the team has solved the question/game, one representative from the team will come forward to the Station Master with the correct answer to win a “Lung Sac” that consists of Jigsaw Puzzle. There will be clues provided in each “Pit Stop” to lead the teams to the next destination or direct them to perform a task, either together or by a single member.
There will be a total of 5 “Pit Stops” and hence, 5 “lung Sac” of Jigsaw Puzzle pieces to be collected and assembled. The team that arrives first in the finishing line with a completed/assembled puzzle is awarded the grand prize.
