Trampolining is a favorite sport among young people, but it comes with risks. Falling from a height can cause serious spinal cord injuries, which might lead to lifelong paralysis. Therefore, it’s crucial to be extra careful when engaging in this activity.

A-Le, a 20-year-old former vibrant and outgoing cheerleader captain known for his tall and well-built physique. He was a prominent figure with a dynamic presence among his peers. He is now in the intensive care unit, wearing a neck brace and unable to feel anything below his neck. His family and friends are deeply worried.

During a trampoline training session, he lost his balance during a flip and fell heavily, hitting the back of his head and losing consciousness. When he regained awareness, he found himself completely limp and unable to move.

The fall resulted in fractures and dislocations of his fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae, a condition commonly referred to as “breaking your neck.”

Emergency surgery, specifically a 360-degree cervical fusion, was performed to stabilize his spine and prevent further damage. It’s crucial for bystanders to remain calm and avoid moving the patient to prevent exacerbating the injury.

A-Le’s injury was classified as Grade C on the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) Impairment Scale, indicating partial motor and sensory function below the injury level. He also experienced severe complications, including difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, low body temperature, and incontinence. Additionally, he suffered from priapism (abnormal erections) due to the spinal cord injury. He experiences significant muscle weakness and relies on a ventilator for breathing.

Long-term care involves maintaining respiratory function, preventing complications such as bedsores, and undergoing intensive rehabilitation. Unfortunately, A-Le is expected to use a wheelchair for life.

His situation is truly heartbreaking. I urge everyone, especially young people, to exercise extreme caution during sports and recreational activities. Risky stunts, such as flipping into pools, can be dangerous; a single mistake can lead to severe spinal injuries and lifelong paralysis. Always prioritize safety and be mindful of the risks involved.

Don’t let a moment of fun turn into a life-changing tragedy.
