According to the Consultant Medical Oncologist at Beacon Hospital, Dr. Azura Rozila Ahmad, Integrated Cancer Care is a comprehensive (holistic) cancer treatment method that aims to support the needs of cancer patients including their caregivers in a caring and effective manner.
“Integrated Cancer Care takes into account patients’ needs other than treatment such as their emotional, physical and spiritual health. External aspects of the effects of cancer treatment cannot be ignored and can be an important factor that can help the quality of life of patients as well as caregivers. In fact, such care can give support and confidence to patients to continue with their treatment,” she explained.
Survival rate for stage four cancer patients
Commenting on the chances of stage four cancer patients to recover, Dr. Azura said modern cancer treatments are changing rapidly, producing many more effective high-tech treatments that can change the fate of cancer patients.
Evidence can be seen through statistics in developed countries such as the United Kingdom showing the cure rate has increased from 25 per cent in the 1970s to 50 per cent this decade.
“There are patients with stage four cancer who can still be cured. Patients such as those with lymphoma or testicular cancer who received appropriate treatment in time have a chance to be fully recovered. There are also cases where their primary cancer has not spread much and they managed to improved their condition to be better.
“The world’s first targeted drug has been approved by the FDA in the United States since 1998. Today, there are many targeted treatments (precision medicine) in the field of oncology.
“Therefore, more patients with stage four cancer can also benefit from living longer if they receive appropriate treatment. Immunotherapy treatment also triggers the unexpected success of treatment for certain cancers,” she explained.
Alternative treatments
In addition to all the treatments and preventative measures taken, there are patients and their families opted for alternative treatments to treat cancer. According to Dr. Azura, people should be careful when considering alternative treatments.
Even so, alternative treatments by certified specialists such as acupuncture, yoga and meditation can help patients feel calm and have the possibility to reduce side effects from cancer treatment.
COVID-19 vaccine for Cancer patients
Dr. Azura said cancer patients are categorized under high-risk group for Covid-19 infection and are likely to need treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) due to their weak immune system compared to healthy body.
“The recommendation to complete injections for cancer patients is supported by cancer expert bodies from around the world. In general, there is no specific Covid-19 vaccine for cancer patients. However, it would be best to discuss with your specialist first before getting an injection,” she explained.
